OMAHA, Neb. -- The top-ranked Creighton men's soccer team pushed its record to 9-0-0 with a commanding, 4-0 victory over non-conference opponent Missouri State on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Coming off back-to-back wins, including a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Loyola Marymount last week, Missouri State was outmatched by the Bluejays as the Bears fell to 3-3-2 with the loss.
The Bluejays, who have outscored their opponents 23-3 this season, completed their seventh shutout of the season in the win.
Goal scorers for Creighton were Timo Pitter (20'), Fabian Herbers (26'), Fernando Castellanos (28'), and Evan Waldrep (31').
Each of the Bluejays' four scores came in the first half, marking Creighton's highest-scoring half of the season. Prior to Tuesday's win, Creighton's most potent offensive half of play came in the Bluejays' previous outing (Sept. 26) when they scored three unanswered goals to down BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall.
Pitter's 20th-minute goal gave the Bluejays an early, 1-0 edge. Pitter is Creighton's second leading goal-scorer behind Herbers' eight scores.
Herbers followed suit less than seven minutes later, blasting a free kick from 25 yards out past leaping Missouri State keeper Liam Priestley. Herbers has recorded at least one point in each of Creighton's nine matches.
Less than two minutes later, Castellanos netted his second goal of the season. He collected a deflected pass from Ricky Lopez-Espin, then sent a shot into the net from 20 yards out.
In the 31st minute, Waldrep, a freshman midfielder, scored his first career goal. The Arizona native has seen action in three matches for the Bluejays.
Daniel Rutter made his collegiate debut in the win, relieving Pitter in the 72nd minute.
The Bluejays, who outshot the Bears by a 9-4 margin, limited Missouri State to just one shot attempt in the second half.
Creighton, the nation's lone unbeaten/untied team, will host BIG EAST opponent DePaul at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3 inside Morrison Stadium.
