Bluejay WBB Claims First BIG EAST Win, 65-62 at Villanova

Villanova, Pa. - Led by a combined 41 points from MC McGrory (22) and Audrey Faber (19), the Creighton women's basketball team posted its first BIG EAST victory of the season, 65-62, at Villanova on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
The win moved the Bluejays to 7-9 on the season and 1-3 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova dropped to 8-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Sophomore Bailey Norby got the Bluejays off to a quick start right out of the gate, knocking down the first three-pointer of her career on Creighton's first possession. Norby went on to score six in the opening period, leading Creighton to a 16-11 lead. Despite a slower pace in the second period, Creighton held its lead through the period, taking a 24-21 edge into the break thanks to a mid-range shot from senior Tessa Leytem in the final minute of the half.
In the opening moments of the second half the Bluejays used a five-point burst to create some separation. Faber opened the quarter with a trey from the right corner, followed by a jumper in the paint from McGrory. Up 33-28 moments later, Creighton delivered another body blow as Norby knocked down a driving layup, McGrory tossed in the next five as the Bluejays pushed their lead to its largest margin (40-28) with 5:14 left. Late in the third Creighton pushed the lead to 15 via a trey from junior Lauren Works, while the Bluejays took a 49-36 lead into the final frame.
Villanova came out with pressure at the onset of the fourth; scoring the first six points to force Bluejay head coach Jim Flanery to use a timeout. Creighton rallied behind the guidance of their coach with a 6-0 to push the lead back to 13 (55-42) with just under seven minutes left. Down the stretch the Wildcats chipped away at the lead, getting within two in the final minute, but the Bluejays knocked down six of eight from the charity stripe in the final minute to claim the win.Â
McGrory's 22 led Creighton, while Faber was just a step behind with 19 points.
Villanova got a game-high 25 points from Megan Quinn, while Caroline Coyer delivered 16 points and Alex Louis had 14.
The Bluejays head home to face Xavier and Butler (Jan. 10) next weekend, beginning with a battle Musketeers on Fox Sports 1 on Friday, Jan. 8 at 6:01 pm.
