Bluejays hit .294 and win blocking battle, 11-4.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Creighton Volleyball team finished off a perfect weekend with a 3-0 road win at Butler on Saturday night at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Scores of the match were 25-22, 25-23, 25-12.
Creighton (10-6, 4-0 BIG EAST) opened the evening with a comeback victory. Just as it did in the second set on Friday night at Xavier, the Bluejays overcame a 20-18 deficit to win a set. A 7-2 burst featuring three kills by Jaali Winters helped CU take a 25-22 decision in the opener. Creighton hit .318 in the set as Lydia Dimke dished 15 assists and had five digs. That helped overcome a strong set from Butler star Anna Logan, who had nine kills in 20 swings.
An even bigger comeback was in store during Creighton's second set victory. CU fell behind 5-1 to start the frame and would trail as large as 16-11 before turning the match around. An 8-1 burst helped CU retake the lead. Later, with the score knotted at 23, kills by Dimke and Marysa Wilkinson gave CU the second set and a 2-0 lead at the break.
After the match, Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth was pleased with her team's performance in pressure scenarios.
"The best thing about this weekend was how we handled end game," said Booth. "Both nights we went and won it. Butler makes you so uncomfortable with the way they play you, but it's really good for us. Our backs were against the wall all night, even more than last night, and I like the way we responded."
The Bluejays didn't mess around in the third set, using an 8-1 run to build a 13-6 lead. The lead grew as large as 24-9 before CU capitalized on its fourth match point opportunity to win 25-12. CU hit .433 in the final set and added five blocks to slow down Butler.
Creighton had more kills (47-41) and assists (45-37) than a Butler team that was leading country in both categories as part of a dominant night statistically. CU hit .294 and had three aces, 65 digs and 11 blocks. Butler finished with one ace, 57 digs and four blocks on .168 hitting.
Winters led Creighton with 13 kills and 11 digs, while also supplied a double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs. Wilkinson hit .500 and finished with nine kills and seven blocks, while Brittany Witt had a match-best 17 digs.
Logan finished with 16 kills in 50 swings, adding 11 digs for the double-double. Makayla Ferguson also had a double-double for Butler (13-7, 2-2 BIG EAST), recording 33 assists and 12 digs.
Creighton returns to action next weekend with road matches at Villanova and Georgetown.
