Creighton remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play
OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior captain Ricardo Perez scored two goals as No. 6 Creighton defeated Marquette 2-1 on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 8-2-3 overall and 4-0-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles fell to 3-5-4 during 2016 and 0-3-2 in conference action.
The senior's two-goal performance marked the second multi-goal performance of his career. He also scored two goals last season against Villanova.
Creighton controlled the first half and held a 9-0 shot advantage, and 5-1 edge in corners.
Perez gave the Bluejays a 1-0 lead during the 37th minute. Julius Fohr fired a shot from the right side of the box that Luis Barraza saved, but Perez retrieved the rebound and one-touched the ball into the back of the net from just beyond the 18-yard box. The first-half goal marked the senior's first since he tallied the game-tying goal against Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 5.
In the second half, Marquette turned the momentum and recorded its first shot of the match less than three minutes after the break. The Golden Eagles also forced Alex Kapp to make his first save during the 50th minute.
Marquette contined to apply pressure and took five shots during the first 18 minutes following halftime.
The Golden Eagles held an 8-3 edge in shots during the second half, and 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Marquette found an equalizer during the 72nd minute. Luke Prpa lifted a shot high over Kapp that headed towards the end line in front of the goal where both Jan Maertins and Peter Prescott ran down the ball, but Maertins tapped it into the net to tie the match at a goal a piece.
The Bluejays had only three shots during the second half, but converted on their final attempt of the match.
During the 80th minute, Perez notched the game-winner on a free kick from outside the 18-yard box. The senior struck a low ball into the box where a Marquette defender redirected the ball to the left of the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
The Golden Eagles had one final shot during the 83rd minute, but the ball missed wide.
Luis Barraza made six saves for Marquette, including five during the first half, while Kapp needed to make only one save for his eighth victory of the season.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Villanova. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the Villanova Soccer Complex.
