Creighton set BIG EAST record for wins to open BIG EAST play with 15-straight

OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 22 Creighton volleyball team claimed a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title and set a BIG EAST record for most wins to open the BIG EAST slate with victories in its first 15 matches after a 3-0 sweep of Providence on Friday night in front of 1,103 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Bluejays completed the night with scores of 25-15, 25-18, 25-13.
Creighton improved to 21-6 overall and 15-0 in conference play, while Providence fell to 13-18 and 1-14 in league action.
Taryn Kloth led the Bluejays with 14 kills and hit .560 to set a career-high for hitting percentage in a single-match, and Lauren Smith added nine kills on .562 hitting.
Lydia Dimke dished out 34 assists and guided Creighton to a .366 hitting percentage.
Cayala Veverka and Jenae Alderson each finished with eight kills to pace the Friars. Libero Michelle Cruz led Providence with 12 digs, and Chicyia Clark had 24 assists.
The Bluejays opened the match hitting .389 with 16 kills in the first set. Creighton led by as many as 11 points before Kloth finished her sixth kill of the opening frame to give the Bluejays a 25-15 win.
Seniors Jess Bird and Smith led the offensive attack with four kills a piece during the second set. Providence kept the set close to 5-3 before committing a service error to give the ball to serving specialist Amanda Foje. Foje served up an ace and Smith converted two kills as Creighton took a 9-3 advantage. The Friars used a small 3-1 run to cut the deficit to four at 10-6, but Creighton never led by less than five the rest of the set on its way to a 25-18 win and give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead into the break.
Providence owned its only two leads of the match during the third set at 2-1 and 3-2, but Creighton gained the lead, 4-3, and never lost it on its way to a 12-point victory, 25-13. The Bluejays finished the final set hitting .344 during the final frame, and Kloth added to her total with five kills.
Creighton and Providence will matchup again tomorrow night. First-serve inside D.J. Sokol Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
