Jess Bird Delivers Eight Kills Without an Error
Omaha, Neb. -- Behind 16 kills from sophomore Taryn Kloth as well as eight kills and no errors from senior Jess Bird, the No. 21 Creighton Volleyball team delivered a 3-0 sweep of Georgetown on Friday, Nov. 18.
Set scores for the match were 25-17, 25-20 and 25-19. The win lifted Creighton to 23-6 overall and 17-0 in BIG EAST action, while Georgetown fell to 6-24 on the season and 2-15 in conference action. Creighton's 17 victories tie a BIG EAST record first set by the Bluejays last fall.
Two bursts turned the first set for Creighton, tied 6-6 the Bluejays forced the Hoyas into three consecutive errors to seize a 9-6 edge. A service error gave the Bluejays the lead (7-6), followed by a block from Bird and senior Lauren Smith and capped by a Georgetown attack error. Up 9-8 moments later, Creighton rattled off four straight on kills by Smith and sophomore Jaali Winters surrounding two aces from sophomore Samantha Bohnet to make it 13-8. The Bluejays cruised to a 25-17 win, led by six first set kills from Winters.
Set number two was a close battle that saw the Bluejays trailing 15-13 at the midpoint. Head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth used a timeout to calm her squad down. The break worked to perfection as Creighton claimed the next four points on two back-to-back kills from Kloth, a Georgetown attack error and capped by a kill by junior Marysa Wilkinson. Georgetown momentarily stopped the Creighton surge with a kill, but a block by Wilkinson and Kloth and another kill from Kloth forced the Hoyas to use a timeout at 19-16. Creighton went on to take the set 25-20, hitting .395 as a team in the set.
Georgetown continued to battle fiercely in the third set, forcing seven ties in the third. Knotted at 17-17 the Bluejays used a 5-1 run to put the set and the match out of reach. This time a cross court kill from Winters got Creighton rolling. Senior Amanda Foje came off the bench to force a Georgetown error with a strong serve. After a Hoyas kill to make it 18-17, Bird went down the line for her eighth kill of the match. Smith stepped up next with a solo block, followed by a tandem block with setter Lydia Dimke. Creighton went on to close out the match with consecutive aces from Winters.
Kloth's 16 kills led all attackers; even more impressive was hit .577 hitting percentage. Winters finished with 12 kills, while Dimke posted a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs.
