Creighton ends season at 13-7-3
OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 23 Creighton men's soccer team fell to Providence 2-1 on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium during the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Friars' Danny Griffin launched a shot from outside the top of the 18-yard box past BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Alex Kapp into the top-right corner for the game-winner during the 83rd minute.
Providence (15-6-0) will play in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament next weekend against North Carolina or Syracuse. The ACC rivals meet on Sunday, and the winner of that contest will host the Friars.
The Bluejays concluded their season at 13-7-3.
Creighton opened the scoring in front of the 2,539 fans at Morrison Stadium with a goal during the ninth minute. Riggs Lennon sent a pass towards the far post where a Providence defender deflected the ball towards the foot of Joel Rydstrand who one-touched the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Rydstrand's third of the season.
Providence responded with a goal during the 21st minute. BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year Julian Gressel scored his 15th goal of the season and fourth of the NCAA Tournament to tie the match at one. Brendan Constantine sent a pass from the right-side of the penalty area to the top of the six-yard box before Gressel sent the ball into the back of the net.
Creighton held an 11-4 shot advantage at the half, but Colin Miller made five saves to keep the score at 1-1 after 45 minutes.
Neither team gave an inch during the second half, as both the Bluejays and Friars had limited opportunities to gain an advantage.
During the 83rd minute Providence capitalized on a counter opportunity for the game-winner. Gressel controlled the ball into the attacking zone before passing the ball back to Griffin who lifted a shot into the back of the net for the Friars' second goal of the match.
Creighton attempted to find an equalizer as Ricky Lopez-Espin forced Miller to make his final save of the match with less than five minutes to play, and Ricardo Perez had a shot blocked during the final minute.
Miller, who shared BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year honors with Kapp, ended the night with nine saves for Providence, helping offset Creighton's 20-9 advantage in shots.
Kapp had three saves to wrap-up the season with 78.
Perez, a senior co-captain, played his 52nd and final match at Morrison Stadium on Saturday to set a stadium record for the most matches played by an individual player.
