Stout Defense Leads Women's Basketball to 56-53 Win Over Dayton
11/26/2016 6:55:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Bimini, Bahamas -- Led by four blocks from senior Brianna Rollerson, the Creighton women's basketball team rallied from an early double-digit deficit to down Dayton, 56-53, on Saturday, Nov. 26.
The win pushed the Bluejay record to 2-3 on the season, while Dayton fell to 2-4.
Creighton got off to more than a slow start as the Bluejays trailed 17-6 with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Bluejays closed the period with four straight on a layup from senior MC McGrory and two free throws by Rollerson to end the period down 17-10. Creighton shot just 22% (4-of-18) over the first 10 minutes, but grabbed eight offensive rebounds to stay with striking distance.
Both teams struggled from the field in the second period, sinking just three field goals each. The Flyers opened the period with back-to-back buckets to push its lead to 21-10 with 8:31 on the clock. From that point, however, the Bluejays limited Dayton to 1-of-9 from the field. The defensive stops gave Creighton's offense time to claw back into the contest. Creighton's rally began with a traditional three-point play from sophomore Audrey Faber as she glided from the left side to the bucket for a layup and the bonus free throw. Following two Dayton free throws, McGrory hit the Bluejays' first trey of the game to make it 23-16. She added two free throws on the next position, then Faber hit one of two from the charity stripe to make it 23-19 with 55 remaining in the half.
Down 25-19 moments later the Bluejays' final minute of the half turned the tide. Creighton pulled two points closer on two free throws by Faber, then forced Dayton into its 12 turnover of the half. Holding for the final shot, Faber knocked down a pivotal three-pointer from the left to send the Bluejays into the locker room down just one at 25-24.
Switching ends of the floor suited Creighton as the Bluejays used a 10-2 run to bust out to a 34-27 lead with 7:57 left in the third. McGrory ignited the run as she knocked down a trey to open the period. Junior Sydney Lamberty capped the run with another three-ball as the Bluejays hit as much treys in the first two minutes of the second half as they did in the entire first half. After being stunned in the opening minutes of the third, Dayton battled back to tie the contest at 38-38 in the waning moments of the third, but the Bluejays took a 43-42 edge into the final frame.
The first five minutes of the fourth saw the two teams trade buckets, but with 537 left it was Dayton clinging to a 50-49 advantage. The Bluejays responded to the challenge by feeding the post as Rollerson scored on the block to reclaim the lead. Following a defensive stop, Lamberty drained Creighton's final trifecta of the night to push out to a 54-50 lead with 2:47 left. A bucket by the Flyers on the ensuing position made it a one possession contest with 2:17 on the clock. Following a missed field goal by the Bluejays, Dayton had a chance to tie the game, but Rollerson clamped down on a shot by Alex Harris for her fourth block of the night.
The following play saw Rollerson step up again as she grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled. Rollerson calmly sank both free throws to make it 56-52. Dayton's Jenna Burdetta knocked down one of two from the charity stripe with 45 seconds left. The Bluejays used the entire shot clock, but could not convert to put the game away, so Dayton had one final chance to send the game to overtime. The Flyers got two looks from long range, but each shot clanged off the rim to give the Bluejays the win.
Faber led the Bluejays with 19 points in the contest, while Rollerson put up 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Lamberty rounded out the double-figure scorers for Creighton with 10 points. Dayton got 12 points from Saicha Grant-Allen to lead the Flyers.
