Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -- The Creighton women's basketball team closed out the non-conference schedule with a decisive 72-50 win over Marist on Wednesday, Dec. 21, claiming their first true road victory of the season.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 6-4 on the season, while Marist fell to 4-8.
After a slow start from the field (1-of-6) put the Bluejays down 7-2 at the first media timeout, junior Sydney Lamberty got Creighton on track with the Bluejays' first three-pointer of the game. Fellow junior Myah Mellman followed by draining another trey to give the Bluejays' their first lead of the game. Before the first quarter ended, freshman Jaylyn Agnew jumped in on the three-point party and Creighton took a 15-14 edge into the second period.
Marist reclaimed the lead with a bucket to open the second, but that Creighton responded with 14-2 run, led by nine points from sophomore Audrey Faber, to seize control. Senior Brianna Rollerson reclaimed the lead with a traditional three-point play (18-16). Moments later Faber began to rain down treys, burying three in the next 83 seconds to push the Bluejays out to a 29-18 edge with 7:01 left in the half. Marist was able to chip away over the final seven minutes to cut the Creighton lead to 36-28 at the break.
Early in the third the Red Foxes got within seven (39-32 with 7:39), sending the Bluejays back to basics, shooting the three. This time senior Marissa Janning found the bottom of the net from downtown, following by Agnew's second trey to make it 45-32 (5:57). Up 49-36 moments later, the Bluejays delivered the knockout blow with seven straight on layups from Rollerson and Janning surrounding another trifecta from Faber.
Creighton pushed its lead to as much of 25 (68-43) with 3:34 left, allowing the Bluejays to coast to a 72-50 win.
Faber led the Bluejays with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Lamberty (13), Rollerson (11) and Janning (11) also finished in double-figures. Marist got a game-high 21 points from Maura Fitzpatrick, while Rebekah Hand and her sister Hannah posted 13 and 10 respectively.
Creighton will be off for the next week as the players, coaches and staff celebrate the holiday season, but return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 28 as the Bluejays open BIG EAST play against Butler at 4:00 pm in D.J. Sokol Arena.
