Providence, R.I. - The Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 61-59 loss to Providence in the Friars' Pink Game on Sunday, Feb. 14.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 12-14 on the season and 6-8 in BIG EAST play, while Providence moved to 5-19 overall and 1-13 in BIG EAST action.
Down 9-8 midway through the first quarter, Creighton appeared to get things rolling on back-to-back three-pointers from junior MC McGrory and sophomore Myah Mellman to claim a 14-9 edge. Providence responded with four straight before sophomore Jade Owens drained a running jumper in the closing seconds to give the Bluejays a 16-13 advantage heading into the second period. Creighton held onto its small edge through much of the second quarter, pushing the lead to four at 25-21 with 2:23 remaining. The Friars, however, rallied with a 9-4 run to take a one point edge in at the half (30-29).
The third quarter saw the Friars push their lead to nine (50-41) late and eventually take a game-high 56-46 lead with just over seven minutes remaining. Down the stretch the Bluejays chipped away, scoring seven straight to make it a one possession game at 58-55 (36 seconds). After two free throws from Providence's Sarah Beal made it 60-55 the Bluejays scored the next four a steal by Owens gave Creighton the ball with eight seconds left.
Out of timeouts, the Bluejays were unable to convert as Owens brought the ball into the front court and a hurried shot by sophomore Sydney Lamberty missed its mark.
Providence closed the game with one of two from the line to earn the 61-59 win.
McGrory led Creighton with 18 points, while Owens also reached double figures with 11. Providence got 13 points from Beal and 11 from Yoyo Nogic as well as Madde Jolin.
