Finlay assists game-winning goal as USMNT completes year-opening camp
CARSON, Calif. -Â Former Creighton Men's Soccer standout, Ethan Finlay, helped the U.S. Men's National Team to a pair of exhibition wins as part of its year-opening camp, seeing playing time in both of the team's victories. Just moments after entering the match, Finlay dished out the game-winning assist to Jozy Altidore in the U.S.'s, 1-0, win over Canada on Friday, Feb. 5.
The USMNT defeated Iceland, 3-2, on Jan. 31, with Finlay seeing 60 minutes of action and recording three shot attempts.
In the United States' 1-0 win over Canada last night, Finlay made a tremendous impact just moments after checking into the match. On his first touch of the contest, and just one minute after replacing Jordan Morris, Finlay beat a Canada defender and served a cross to Altidore who buried a game-winning, 89th-minute header.
Finlay, who helped lead Creighton to the 2011 College Cup, spent the past month as part of the United State's 23-man training camp roster. The year-opening camp culminated in a pair of friendlies against Iceland (Jan. 31) and Canada (Feb. 5), which were played at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
In his four seasons at Creighton (2008-11), Finlay tallied 103 career points, including 43 goals, and was tabbed as an NSCAA All-American in 2010 (Second Team) and 2011 (First Team). He was selected 10th overall in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew.
Â
This season, Finlay started all 34 games for Columbus, helping lead the Crew to the MLS Cup, and earned spots on the MLS All-Star team and MLS Best XI. His 13 assists were fifth-most in the league.
Finlay was one of two Creighton Men's Soccer alumni on the USMNT training camp roster, along with Eric Miller.
Â
Miller spent three seasons at Creighton (2011-13), making 63 appearances, including 62 starts. He helped the Bluejays to College Cup appearances in 2011 and 2012, and earned NSCAA All-Region Second Team honors in 2013. Miller was selected fifth overall in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Montreal Impact.
