Chicago, Ill. -- The long run of four games in four days finally caught up with the Creighton women's basketball team as the Bluejays fell to St. John's in the BIG EAST Tournament Title game, 50-37, on Tuesday, March 8.
With the loss the Bluejays close out the regular season with a 17-17 record, while St. John's moved to 23-9. The win clinched the BIG EAST's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament for the Red Storm.
Creighton will await a potential big from the WNIT early next week, but the Bluejays expect to have another game thanks to Creighton's run to the BIG EAST Tournament Finals.
The opening three periods of play were a combination of great defense and tired legs on both sides. The Red Storm held an 11-10 edge after the first ten minutes. Each team was 5-for-16 in the period (31.3%), with St. John's hitting one three-pointer to hold the slim edge.
In the second period St. John's pushed its lead to 15-10 by the media timeout with 4:23 left in the half. The Bluejays turned to junior captain MC McGrory, who drew a foul and knocked down both free throws to break Creighton out of its slump. Trailing 21-14 with 2:07 left in the half, the Bluejays closed the period on a 6-0 run to get back within one. Junior Lauren Works delivered the first four points of the Bluejay run, while McGrory knocked down two more free throws with five seconds remaining in the half.
Freshman Audrey Faber gave the Bluejays the lead on the opening possession of the third period, draining a trifecta from the left wing. St. John's, however, answered with a bucket to knot the game at 23-23. Heading into the final period of play, McGrory brought the game even at 28-28 from the free throw line.
St. John's opened the fourth with a trey from Akina Wellere and did not look back. The Red Storm outscored the Bluejays 22-9 in the period, including a 16-5 run over the first eight minutes.
Faber led Creighton with 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss, while McGrory chipped in 11. Following the game McGrory was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team as she led the Bluejays to the title game.
