#18 Volleyball Wins at Iowa State For First Victory of 2016

Jaali Winters and Lydia Dimke named to All-Tournament Team
AMES, Iowa -- The No. 18 Creighton Volleyball team picked up its first win of 2016 with a 3-1 win over Iowa State on Sunday at the Iowa State Challenge in Ames, Iowa. Scores of the match in favor of CU were 19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22.
Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.
Iowa State took advantage of a mistake-prone Bluejay squad in the first set, with the Cyclones claiming a 25-19 win. A pair of 5-0 runs helped ISU to an early 12-6 lead, and the Cyclones never looked back. Creighton had six attack errors, hitting just .065, while also committing four service errors in the first frame. Jess Schaben paced ISU with five kills and added four digs, while Suzanne Horner had 10 kills and set the Cyclones to a .286 hitting percentage.
Creighton used a late rally to win the second set and even the match at intermission. The Jays trailed 20-16 before ending the set on a 9-2 run that featured a pair of blocks from Lauren Smith and Megan Ballenger. A kill from Lydia Dimke on set point closed out the frame. Creighton hit .222 in the set, including seven kills by Jaali Winters.
The Bluejays took control of the match with a 25-21 win in the third set. CU never trailed in the frame, racing to a 10-4 lead. The Cyclones drew within 11-9, and later tied the score at 16-all. But CU would pull away down the stretch, moving in front 22-18 on an ace by Amanda Foje. ISU helped CU down the stretch with a pair of serving errors, including one on set point, as CU won 25-21.
Creighton finished off the Cyclones in the fourth set. Clinging to a 19-18 lead, Creighton scored three in a row to move up 22-18. ISU answered with three in a row of their own. But the teams exchanged three straight sideouts, as Winters put down the winner on match point.
Winters led Creighton with 18 kills and 10 digs for her second straight double-double, while Dimke also had a double-double with 32 assists and 14 digs. Brittany Witt also added a team-high 16 digs for CU. Creighton hit .192 with five aces, 62 digs and 12 blocks.
Iowa State was paced by 20 kills from Jess Schaben. Branen Berta had a match-best 26 digs. The Cyclones had 51 kills, five aces, 79 digs and five blocks on .163 hitting.
Creighton is on the road next weekend when it travels to Los Angeles, Calif., for the USC Radisson Classic. The Bluejays will face Northern Iowa (2-1) in a match that begins on Friday night at 7 pm Central. The Bluejays meet No. 24 Kentucky (2-1) and No. 7 (USC) on Saturday in one of the nation's top non-conference tournaments.
