Jays improve to 4-4 with sweep of defending Southern Conference champions
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Volleyball team finished second in the Bluejay Invitational with a 3-0 victory over visiting Chattanooga on Saturday night before 1,014 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena. Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-19, 25-12.
Creighton's win, it's second sweep in a span of 25 hours, improved the Bluejays to 4-4 on the year. Chattanooga fell to 5-5 with the setback.
A pair of Bluejays were named to the All-Tournament Team, Lydia Dimke and Taryn Kloth. Kansas junior Madison Rigdon was named the event's MVP. Joining them on the All-Tournament Team were Lincoln native Kristy Wieser of Chattanooga, TCU's Regan McGuire, and the Kansas duo of Cassie Wait and Ainise Havili. Kansas won the event with a 2-0 record, finishing ahead of second-place Creighton (2-1), third-place TCU (1-1) and fourth-place Chattanooga (0-3). TCU and Kansas did not meet in the event due to two scheduled meetings later this fall as Big 12 rivals.
Creighton trailed just twice all match, falling behind 1-0 to open the first and second sets. Both times CU answered to take a lead 6-3 and cruised to wins against the defending Southern Conference champs who won 26 matches last fall.
Kloth had an 8-0 serving run that featured an ace and a pair of back-row kills as CU jumped to a 12-3 lead in the opener. She had six kills and Dimke dished 12 helpers to spur the early advantage.
The Bluejay offense clicked on all cylinders in the second set, hitting a blistering .433 with 16 kills in 30 swings. Dimke distributed 14 assists among five hitters and added a pair of terminations herself.
CU's momentum continued through the intermission. Megan Ballenger authored a 7-0 spurt behind the service line to stretch the lead to double-digits at 18-8, and after a sideout Amanda Foje came on to serve a 7-0 run of her own. A kill from Brittany Lawrence, her first of the season, closed out the Mocs. Creighton hit .519 in the third set, with Kloth connecting on six kills in eight swings against a tiring UTC line-up that played earlier in the day in a 3-0 loss to TCU.
Creighton hit a season-high .385 in the victory, finishing with 45 kills on 91 swings with a season-low 10 attack errors. Dimke dished 39 of CU's 45 assists, and added two of CU's six aces at the service line. The Jays out-dug UTC 45-32 and won the blocking battle, 5-4. UTC finished with 27 kills and hit .082, owning just two aces and 32 digs.
Kloth topped all players with 17 kills, hitting .400 in the process. Brittany Witt had a match-high 11 digs, and Lauren Smith paced CU with three blocks.
UTC was led by Wieser's eight kills and .286 hitting percentage. She also led the Mocs with three blocks and had an ace.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday with a match at Kansas State. That contest can be heard on KZOT (1180 AM).
