Providence, R.I. -- Behind a combined 36 points and 18 rebounds from seniors Lauren Works (14), Brianna Rollerson (11) and Marissa Janning (11), the Creighton women's basketball team downed Providence on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 12-5 on the season and 6-1 in BIG EAST play, while Providence fell to 9-9 overall and 1-6 in conference.
Creighton bounced out to a 7-4 edge in the first four minutes of play as Rollerson grabbed two offense boards a bucket and Janning drained her first from long range. The first quarter, however, belonged to the Friars. Providence hit nine of their first 13 shots (69%) from the field to seize an 18-11 edge with 2:16 left.
Trailing by seven the Bluejays' defense stepped up to change the contest by holding Providence scoreless for the next 7:28. During that stretch Creighton closed the first period with a three-point play by Rollerson to make it 18-14. The Bluejays followed with the first eight points of the second on treys from freshman Jaylyn Agnew and junior Myah Mellman, then sophomore Audrey Faber capped the run with a jumper from the elbow to make it 22-18 (5:28).
After allowing Providence's first bucket of the second with 4:48 left, the Bluejays limited the Friars to just one additional field goal (at the 3:34 mark) in the frame. Creighton, meanwhile went 6-for-11 (55%) to take a 29-22 lead into halftime.
Creighton remained hot in the third (7-for-14) getting two interior buckets each from Rollerson and Agnew, while Works and Faber both connected from long range. The result was a 47-32 Bluejay lead with just under two minutes left in the frame.
Providence responded with a 9-0 run to make it 47-41 with 7:33 left and got within five (50-45) with 3:26 remaining. Each time the Friars pulled within striking distance a Bluejay senior responded. Janning answered the bell first with a trey from the right to make it 50-41, then Works delivered the knockout blow from long range to boost the Creighton advantage to 53-45 with 2:36 left.
"We're not a very team team, but people seem to forget about [Works] from time to time," said head coach Jim Flanery. "She is a integral part of our team and has had a knack for the big shot of late."
Works' 14 points led Creighton, while Rollerson added 12 rebounds to pace the Bluejays in that column. It was Rollerson's fifth double-double of the season. Providence got 18 in the loss from Sarah Beal.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, Jan. 20 as Creighton faces St. John's at 6:00 pm (CT) in Carnesecca Arena.
