Complete Team Performance From Women's Hoops Results in 83-63 Win Over Marquette

Milwaukee, Wis. -- While it's just the second day of 2017, the Creighton women's basketball set a new level of excellence for the season as five Bluejays finished in double figures to lead Creighton to an 83-63 win over Marquette on Monday, Jan. 2.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 9-4 on the season and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Marquette fell to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
"I'm thrilled with tonight's performance. That's as complete of game that we've played in several years," said head coach Jim Flanery. "We were prepared to play tonight, winning each quarter by at least four points. The key was not allowing a team as good as Marquette is on offense go on an extended run, we never allowed them to get rolling."
Creighton jumped out on the Golden Eagles early behind the tandem of sophomore Audrey Faber and senior Marissa Janning. Faber got the Bluejays on the board with a three-ball from the left corner, then followed with a driving layup to set the tone for the game. Down 8-5 with 7:23 remaining, Janning knotted the contest by connecting from downtown, then found Faber for a 14-footer. The duo combined for 13 of Creighton's 18 points in the period as the Bluejays led 18-14 at the quarter.
The second quarter saw Marquette bounce out to a 24-23 lead in the opening three minutes, but Creighton responded with a 10-2 run to regain control. Junior Sydney Lamberty kicked off the Bluejays' burst with a trey from the right wing. Faber delivered a traditional three-point play to make it 29-24 (6:42), following a Golden Eagle bucket Faber connected again from the elbow and Lamberty closed the burst with another layup to make it 33-26 (4:38). Marquette closed to within three in the closing moments (39-36 with 1:27 left), but Creighton senior Brianna Rollerson delivered four points down the stretch to send Creighton to the locker room up 45-36.
The final two possessions of the second served as a warmup for Rollerson in the third as the Omaha native dominated the post with eight points of Creighton's 21 points in the third. Up 53-42 with 6:27 showing on the clock, the Bluejays fed Rollerson on three straight possessions to extend the lead to 59-42, the Bluejays went on to take a 66-51 lead into the final frame.
"Offensively it makes such a difference that we've been able to throw the ball inside to [Rollerson] and not be as reliant on the three," added Flanery.
The final knockout blow came early in the fourth. After Marquette chipped Creighton's lead down to 12 (68-56), with five points in a five-second span, Flanery used a timeout. Following the break the Bluejays responded with 10 of the next 12 to take a 78-58 lead with just over five minutes remaining to put the game out of reach.Â
Rollerson led Creighton with 22 points, while Faber finished with 21. Senior Lauren Works and Janning each closed with 12 points, while Lamberty delivered 10 points and 12 assists for her second career double-double.
Marquette got 14 points from Erika Davenport and Amani Wilborn in the loss.
Creighton returns to the floor on Wednesday, Jan. 4 as the Bluejays battle DePaul at 7:00 pm in McGrath-Philips Arena.
