Omaha, Neb. -- Battling winds of close to 30 miles per hour, the Creighton women's soccer team closed out its 2017 on a high note as the Bluejay defeated Providence 2-1 on Thursday, Oct. 26th.
Sophomore Taryn Jakubowski provided the offensive punch with both Bluejays' goals, scoring in the 28th and 79th minutes to lift Creighton to 4-11-3 overall and 2-5-2 in BIG EAST play. Providence, meanwhile, fell to 10-7-1 on the season and 5-3-1 in conference action. The Friars will begin play in the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 29, hosting the No. 6 seed DePaul.
Playing into the wind it was the Friars who struck first as a counter attack led to a goal from Casey Estey from five yards out. Estey's goal was setup by Providence's Christina Klaum, who sent a pass from just inside the box to her forward. Estey's shot deflected off Bluejay sophomore Jaylin Bosak's foot and into the back of the net in the 24th minute (23:26).
Feeling the urgency to draw even with the wind at their backs, the Bluejays found the answer as sophomore Kate Johnson found Jakubowski along the left side for a goal from just outside the box, pulling Creighton even in the 28th minute (27:11).
With an 11-8 edge in shots at the break, Creighton battled into the wind in the second half. The Bluejays, however, controlled possession with short and precise passing. The technical play yielded the decisive goal in the 79th minute as freshman Haylee Blach sent a ball along the right sideline toward the head of sophomore Kylin Grubb. Blach's pass found her mark as Grubb pushed the ball to Jakubowski for an open goal from five yards away to take the match.
Providence also may have lost its starting goalkeeper as Shelby Hogan was forced to leave the match in the 31st minute. She did not return, forcing Makayla Brady to play the remainder of the contest.
The Bluejays closed the match with 15 shots and six corners, while Providence posted 17 shots and three corners.
