Bluejays improve to 13-0 all-time against Xavier
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The No. 14 Creighton Volleyball team rolled to its 10th straight victory with a straight sets win at Xavier on Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center. The triumph reduces Creighton's magic number for a fourth straight BIG EAST title to one with three matches to play.
Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-22, 25-15, as Creighton improved to 13-0 all-time against Xavier.
"I thought Xavier was very good defensively so there was lots of long points," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "They run such a fast offense it disrupted our rhythm some but we went on some good serving runs, so that was good to see. It wasn't a perfect match but we figured out how to weather the storm a little bit."
Jaali Winters (12) and Marysa Wilkinson (10) each had double-figure kills to lead a Bluejay offense, while Lydia Dimke added a double-double with 33 assists and 15 digs. Brittany Witt added 15 digs for her 11th straight match with double-figure digs.
Xavier was led by seven kills from Audrey Adams, and 15 digs by Meredith Klare.
Creighton outperformed the Musketeers in kills (56-33), hitting percentage (.268-.026), aces (3-2), digs (56-47) and blocks (8-6) and have now won 21 straight sets over Xavier.
The first set was close before Winters served a 9-0 run to extend the CU lead to 24-12.
The second set was the only frame in doubt on the afternoon. The Musketeers closed within one point at 21-20 and 22-21, but both times Wilkinson put down a kill to double the margin. She added her fifth kill of the set to give CU a 24-21 lead, and the Jays took the second set on a Xavier serving error.
In the third game, Samantha Bohnet authored a 5-0 Bluejay run to push the lead to 12-6. The Musketeers drew within 16-12 before a 5-0 run on Dimke's watch gave Creighton control for good. Winters, Taryn Kloth and Naomi Hickman each had four kills in the final frame.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. Central when it visits third-place Butler.
