Men's Soccer Downs Villanova For First BIG EAST Win, Bolowich Earns 100th Victory at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team defeated Villanova 2-0 with goals during each half, as the Bluejays earned their first BIG EAST victory of the season on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium. Head coach Elmar Bolowich also claimed his 100th victory as head coach at Creighton.Â
The Bluejays improved to 1-1-0 during BIG EAST play and 5-3-0 overall, while the Wildcats fell to 1-1-0 in conference and 5-4-0 overall.Â
Senior Noah Franke opened the scoring with a goal during the 15th minute. Franke received a pass from Kuba Polat and rushed towards the middle of the field about 25 yards away from the end line. The Orlando, Florida, native fired a shot from distance and beat the Villanova goalkeeper to give Creighton an early 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays controlled possession for the majority of the first half and held an 11-4 advantage in shots and 4-0 edge in corner kicks after the opening 45 minutes.
Fellow senior Lucas Stauffer found the back of the net during the 52nd minute to extend the Bluejays' lead. Stauffer recovered a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box before sending the ball inside the far post for his first goal of the season, making it 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the second half.
Villanova nearly scored its first goal of the match during the 53rd minute as Zach Zandi's shot hit the post. The Wildcats fired off five other shots following halftime, but Bluejay goalkeeper Michael Kluver needed to make only one save during the closing moments of the match to preserve the shutout.Â
Kluver ended the night with two saves on the way to his third shutout and Creighton's fourth overall.
The Bluejays ended the match with a 15-10 edge in shots and 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.Â
Creighton head coach Elmar Bolowich is now 100-32-12 overall during his seventh season in Omaha. He is also 34-12-4 during conference matches as Creighton improved to 5-0 during BIG EAST home openers.Â
Creighton is back in action Tuesday night against Nebraska-Omaha. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Mavericks is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Caniglia Field on UNO's Dodge Street campus.Â
