#17 Men's Soccer Falls During Penalty Shootout To Marquette In BIG EAST Semifinals

Bluejays outlasted by Golden Eagles in 12 PK rounds, 10-9
OMAHA, Neb. -- The top-seeded and No. 17 Creighton men's soccer team fell 10-9 during a 12-round penalty kick shootout to fourth-seeded Marquette during a BIG EAST semifinal match on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays and Golden Eagles played to an even 1-1 draw after 110 minutes before the lengthy shootout.
Creighton moved to 11-4-3 this season, while Marquette pushed its record to 7-8-3 and advanced to the BIG EAST title match.Â
The Bluejays opened Wednesday's scoring with a goal from Luke Haakenson during the 23rd minute. Haakenson received a pass from Ziyad Fares before sending a shot at the Golden Eagle goalkeeper. The junior's first attempt was saved before Haakenson recovered the ball and pushed it over the goal line and gave Creighton a 1-0 advantage.
Marquette knotted the match at 1-1 with the equalizer less than two minutes after the Bluejays' goal as Luka Prpa found the back of the net during the 25th minute. Patrick Seagrist and Zak Wegner each recorded assists on the play.
Creighton held a 9-5 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes as BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Luis Barraza made three saves to keep the match tied at the half.
The Bluejays continued to apply pressure during the second half and controlled the shot count 12-3, but Barraza recorded four additional saves to extend the contest.Â
Sven Koenig nearly gave Creighton a lead with 25 minutes remaining in regulation. Koenig, the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, put a move on a Marquette defender and fired a shot towards the far post, but Barraza made a foot save. Yudai Tashiro recovered the loose ball on a rebound before sending a shot wide to the right of the goal.Â
The Bluejays made one final push during the closing minute of regulation, but a pair of shots went wide.
During the first overtime, the Bluejays launched three shots, including one on frame that was saved.
Marquette had its best opportunity during extra time in the second OT period. Lukas Sunesson sent a shot towards the far post before Paul Kruse extended to make a save.
Kruse ended the 110-minute draw with two saves.Â
The penalty kick shootout lasted 12 rounds before the Golden Eagles' Josh Coan ended the match during the final frame.Â
Marquette advanced to the BIG EAST title match and will play against second-seeded Georgetown in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon.
The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship bracket will be announced during a selection show which is scheduled for Monday and will be broadcast on NCAA.com. Twenty-four conference champions qualify automatically for the field of 48 teams, while Creighton will seek to claim one of the remaining 24 at-large spots in the tournament.Â
