Bluejays fall short before their Orlando trip
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell to Northern Illinois at the Hanscom Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon by a 6-1 scoreline.
Creighton dropped to 2-8 on the season before heading to Florida for its next five matches.
In doubles play, the Huskies took the early advantage after a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot. Creighton responded with a victory of their own after duo Mac Mease and Daniel Lopez-Rey took a 6-4 win at No. 2. The Bluejays were unable to close out, however, as Alex Koca and Stratton Brown fell in a tight 7-5 contest, giving Northern Illinois the point in doubles.
"NIU is another tough team and played well when they needed it most in doubles and singles. Danny and Mac played strong at #2 doubles and we had chances at the other two spots," head coach Tom Lilly said.
In singles play, the Huskies started where they left off, winning at the No. 4 (6-3, 6-2) and No. 5 (7-5, 6-3) to take a 3-0 lead, before sealing the victory as Armando Gandini took the No. 3 match to three sets before falling short in a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 scoreline. Stratton Brown was able to get Creighton on the board with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 result before the Bluejays suffered three-set defeats at the No. 1 and 6 spots.
"We are 2-8 and that is disappointing because we are getting better and just haven't been able to win enough individual matches against the strong competition we have played," Lilly said. "Hopefully all of this will pay off in Florida."
The Bluejays return to the courts to take on John Carroll on Monday for their first of four matches in Orlando, Florida during Creighton's spring break.
