Saturday's match lasted nearly three and a half hours
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Creighton women's tennis team endured a tough defeat on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 to conference opponent Xavier in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The Bluejays dropped to 12-7 on the year, and 0-2 against BIG EAST opponents.
Xavier came out the gates strong, putting the pressure on the Bluejays in doubles play. Despite holding a 4-4 tie at the No. 1 position from duo Ashley Ishimura and Michaela Henne, the Bluejays fell 6-3 at both the No. 2 and 3 spots as the Musketeers took the doubles point.
Xavier took an early advantage in singles play as well, earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 3. The Bluejays rallied with a win of their own, as Ishimura recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1. The Musketeers responded with a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4 to push the overall score to 3-1. Henne grinded out a result at No. 2 after losing the first set 3-6. Her 6-4, 6-2 comeback gave the Bluejays a glimmer of hope before Xavier recorded a 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 win at the No. 6 position and sealed the team win for the Musketeers.
Claire Embree opened her No. 5 singles match with a 7-5 win, dropped the second set 6-4 and held a 4-4 tie in the deciding set before play was stopped because Xavier clinched the team victory.
Saturday afternoon's match lasted nearly three and a half hours.
"A tough loss today against a tough Xavier team," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We played better in doubles today but it wasn't enough. Our players made a great run at the singles matches and game up short. These are the matches we have won so many times this year and just didn't have enough today. I'm proud of how hard we compete on the court."
Creighton is back in action when it plays host to Saint Louis on Friday. Doubles play is set to begin at 1 p.m.
