Sven Koenig scored a pair of goals for the Bluejays
OMAHA, Neb. – Sven Koenig scored two second-half goals as the No. 25 Creighton men's soccer team opened its BIG EAST schedule with a 3-0 shutout of Butler on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,711 for Creighton's Homecoming.
The Bluejays improved to 4-1-1 and 1-0-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Bulldogs fell to 1-4-1 and 0-1-0 in league play.
Koenig scored Creighton's second goal of the match during the 51st minute, and tallied the third and final goal of the contest during the 74th.
In addition to Koenig's pair of goals, Ziyad Fares also found the back of the net to lift the Bluejays past the defending BIG EAST regular-season champions.
Freshman Paul Kruse made two saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season.
Creighton has not allowed a goal at home this season through its first four contests at Morrison Stadium, the longest such streak to start the season since 2014 when the Bluejays also recorded four consecutive shutouts at home.
Fares opened the scoring for Creighton during the 48th minute. Luke Haakenson controlled the ball just inside Creighton's attacking half of the field and lifted a pass towards the top of the 18-yard box where Fares settled the ball towards the right post. The senior caught the Butler goalkeeper off his line and sent the ball towards the far post and into the back of the net to give the host Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes following the first goal, Fares found himself with the ball in the right side of the 18-yard box. Fares attempted to cross the ball, but it deflected off a Butler defender before Koenig one-touched the loose ball into the back of the net, extending Creighton's advantage to 2-0 during the 51st minute of action.
Koenig tallied his second goal less than two minutes after the Bluejays' gained a man advantage because of a Butler red card. Joel Rydstrand sent a long through ball from Creighton's defending third towards the Bluejays' attacking zone where Koenig tracked down the ball, outran a defender and found the back of the net during the 74th minute.
Creighton controlled the offensive play throughout the entirety of Saturday's match, as the Bluejays ended the night with a 16-5 advantage in shots. Koenig led the way with six shots, including four on goal, while Haakenson had five with four on target.
Mitch LaGro nearly gave the Bluejays their first goal during the 43rd minute. The senior headed a corner kick from Rydstrand towards the left post where a Butler defender used his chest to stop the ball from going past the end line.
Creighton improved to 3-0-1 at home this season and has not allowed a goal at home since Oct. 14, 2017 during the second to last match of the last season against Xavier. The Bluejays have not allowed a goal during their last 541 minutes played at Morrison Stadium.
