Men's Soccer Drops Match At Xavier, 1-0, After Penalty Kick Goal During 20th Minute

Bluejays ended the night with a 17-7 edge in shots
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Despite holding a 17-7 edge in shot attempts, the Creighton men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Xavier on Friday night in Cincinnati.
The Musketeers scored the lone goal of the match during the 20th minute on a penalty kick.
The Bluejays dropped to 2-2-0 in BIG EAST play and 6-4-1 overall, while Xavier moved to 1-3 in league action and 5-5-1 overall.
Creighton tallied 17 shots, including five on goal, but failed to find the back of the net. Luke Haakenson paced the team with four shots (two on goal) while Tor Trosten and Yudai Tashiro each had three a piece.
The Bluejays tallied seven shots in the first 45 minutes of play and forced three Musketeer saves.
Haakenson's first shot on goal came during the closing moments of the first half. The senior recovered the ball in the box during the 39th minute and turned for a shot with his right foot towards the near post before the ball was knocked out of play by the Xavier goalkeeper. His second attempt on frame came with one minute remaining in the first 45. Haakenson fired a left-footed shot on the ground towards the center of the goal but the ball did not pass the end line.
Bryce Gibson recorded Creighton's first shot on goal after a corner kick. During the 36th minute, Yudai Tashiro's service from the far corner found Gibson's head but the ball stayed out of the net after a Xavier defender headed the ball away.
Creighton continued to apply pressure in the second half and added 10 more shots to its total.Â
Tashiro's free kick during the 60th minute from 20 yards out went just to the left of the goal and another blast moments later from the top of the 18-yard box missed high.
The Bluejays recorded two shots on goal in the second half and controlled possession for the majority of stanza but did not convert an equalizer.
Senior goalkeeper Collin Valdivia recorded two saves on Friday night, including one with on a diving attempt in the early portion of the second half.
Each of the Bluejays' first four BIG EAST matches have ended with 1-0 final scores.Â
Creighton returns to action on Oct. 19 at home against No. 10 St. John's. First touch between the Bluejays and Red Storm at Morrison Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
