Strong Second Half Lifts Women's Basketball to 61-48 Victory Over South Dakota State

Jaylyn Agnew Leads Creighton With 23 Points
Omaha, Neb. – A strong second half and 23 points from senior Jaylyn Agnew lifted the Creighton women's basketball team to an 61-48 victory over South Dakota State on Tuesday, Nov. 12 in D.J. Sokol Arena.
With the win Creighton moved to 2-0 on the season with the win, while South Dakota State fell to 0-2.
The Bluejays got off to a strong start making their first two baskets as junior Tatum Rembao opened the scoring with a layup and senior Olivia Elger knocked down a trey from the wing. Between Creighton's buckets the Jackrabbits hit a three ball of their own to make it 5-3 (9:07). The two teams battled back-and-forth, trading the leads three times. Knotted at 11-11, the Jackrabbits scored the final four points of the quarter to hold a 15-11 edge at one quarter.
Down 19-11 early in the second quarter, Creighton used a 12-2 run to reclaim the lead at 23-21 (4:54). The Bluejay surge got rolling with four free throws from Agnew, following an interior bucket from SDSU's Myah Selland, junior Temi Carda connected on a mid-range jumper and a layup. Creighton's run wrapped on a layup from Agnew and a pair of free throws from Carda to make it 23-21. South Dakota State, however, answered with an 8-2 burst over the final 3:37 to take a 29-25 lead into the break.
Creighton started to heat up in the third quarter as the Bluejays erased their four point halftime deficit with a 14-2 run, scoring on their first six possessions of the second half to open up a 39-33 lead with 5:46 to play in the third quarter. The Bluejays delivered five treys in the quarter including three from Agnew, while Rembao and sophomore Payton Brotzki added one each, to push Creighton's lead to 48-41 with 1:33 left in the third. SDSU closed the quarter with two free throws to send the contest to the final period with Creighton holding a 48-43 edge.
The Bluejays' ninth three-pointer of the game opened the fourth as Agnew connected from long range to make it 51-43 (9:34). Locked in a defensive battle in the final frame, Creighton sealed the win with a trey from Elger to extend its edge to 56-48 (2:19).
Agnew led all scorers with 23 points, while Carda added 13 points and nine rebounds. Creighton closed the night shooting 35 percent (20-57) from the field, including going 10-31 (32.3 percent) from behind the arc 11-15 from the charity strip. The Bluejays out-rebounded the Jackrabbits 39-34 as Creighton grabbed 13 offensive rebounds. The Bluejays dished out 17 assists, while South Dakota State had 11.
Selland led the way for the Jackrabbits with 14 points, while Paiton Burckhard added 12 points of her own. South Dakota State ended the game shooting 38.8 percent (19-49) from the floor, going only 2-13 from three and 8-12 from the free throw line.
Creighton will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 16 as the Bluejays battle Drake at 6:00 pm in Des Moines, Iowa.
