Men's Soccer Falls To Butler During BIG EAST Championship First Round After Late Penalty Kick Goal

Creighton ended the night with a slight 12-11 edge in shots and 8-6 advantage in corners
OMAHA, Neb. – The fourth-seeded Creighton men's soccer team fell 1-0 to fifth-seeded Butler during the First Round of the BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep, on Saturday night at Morrison Stadium.
Creighton dropped to 8-7-2 on the season, while Butler improved to 11-6-1 overall and advanced to the semifinals to face top-seeded Georgetown on Wednesday.
The lone goal of the match came during the 84th minute on a penalty kick converted by Wilmer Cabrera Jr.
Creighton controlled possession for much of the opening 45 minutes. The Bluejay fired off three shots, two on goal, in the first 10 minutes of the match.
Butler started to push the offense late in the first half and forced Paul Kruse to make a diving save with just less than 10 minutes remaining in the half.
The Bluejays held a 6-3 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corners during the first half. Butler goalkeeper Gabriel Gjergji recorded a pair of saves during the first 45 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs opened the second period pushing to find an early goal. Butler's offense pressured the Bluejays back line and the Bulldogs fired a trio of shots in the first 15 minutes but missed wide each time. Butler also had two headers off corners later in the half that went high of the goal.
Following the Butler goal in the 84th minute, Creighton pushed the remainder of the match trying to find an equalizer and a pair of Bluejays fired off shots in the last five minutes of the contest. On Creighton's final attempt with less than 40 seconds remaining, Kuba Polat placed a cross into the box that Kruse headed towards the left side of the six-yard box where Cameron Briggs fired a shot that went wide and hit the outside of the net.

The NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship bracket will be announced during a selection show which is scheduled for Nov. 18 and will be broadcast on NCAA.com. Twenty-four conference champions qualify automatically for the field of 48 teams, while Creighton will seek to claim one of the remaining 24 at-large spots in the tournament.
