Volleyball Sweeps Georgetown To Clinch Eighth Straight 20-Win Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The No. 9 Creighton Volleyball team locked up its eighth straight 20-win campaign with a 3-0 road win at Georgetown on Saturday, Nov. 9th. The victory also clinched a spot in the 2019 BIG EAST Championship, presented by Jeep, later this month.
Scores of the match were 27-25, 25-17, 25-15.
Creighton is now 20-4 on the year and 13-1 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown dropped to 13-15 (3-11 BIG EAST).
Madelyn Cole led Creighton with 28 assists, 10 digs and seven aces while adding five kills, and Keeley Davis had 14 kills to pace the Bluejay attackers. CU finished with 43 kills, 45 digs, eight aces and seven blocks while hitting .250 overall.
GU was topped by seven kills from Elissa Barbosa and Jessica Cusi's 13 digs.The Hoyas finished with 30 kills, 40 digs, two aces and three blocks on .098 hitting.
Creighton led nearly the entire first set but had to battle late to hold off the Hoyas. CU looked in control with a 19-15 advantage , only to see the Hoyas rally to even the score at 20. A kill by freshman Emily Bressman earned CU three set point chances with a 24-21 lead, only to squander each one. CU also couldn't convert on a 25-24 opportunity. The Jays would eventually take a 1-0 lead in the match after s Georgetown attack error and a kill from senior Megan Ballenger.
CU fell behind 7-4 early in the second set before regrouping to post a 25-17 victory. Cole had three consecutive aces as the CU lead stretched to 20-13, and a Georgetown service error closed out the set.
Cole served three more aces in the third frame, including consecutive service winners to make it 6-2. Kills by Ballenger and Zimmerman closed out CU's 25-15 victory, a set in which the Bluejays hit .464.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. Central when it visits Xavier.
NOTES: Creighton, which lost on Friday, avoided suffering consecutive losses in league play for the first time since 2011 ... Madelyn Cole's seven aces were one shy of Carolyn Decker's single-match school record set in 2004, and the most by a Bluejay since Michelle Sicner had seven aces vs. McNeese State on Sept. 17, 2011 ... Creighton entered this season as one fo 14 teams nationally with seven straight 20-win seasons..
