Agnew Drops 31 on Villanova to Lead Women's Basketball to 58-42 Victory

Villanova, Pa. -- Senior Jaylyn Agnew closed 2019 in style, dropping 31 points, in Creighton women's basketball's 58-42 win over Villanova on Tuesday, Dec. 31st.
The win pushed Creighton to 10-3 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Wildcats fell to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Agnew set the tone from the opening tip, scoring 13 points in the opening quarter to help the Bluejays build an 18-11 edge. The first bucket of the game came from Agnew, then as the Wildcats collapsed on Agnew sophomore Rachael Saunders knocked down a three-pointer to make it 5-0. Villanova answered with a trey, but Agnew connected on a step back trifecta (8:41). The hot start continued as the Bluejays pushed their edge to as much as nine in the frame (16-7 with 4:12 remaining) and carried a seven-point lead to the second.
Villanova scored on the opening possession of the second to get within five, but Creighton responded with an 11-0 run to regain control. Junior Temi Carda started things off with a driving jumper, then Agnew connected for her third three-ball of the afternoon to make it 23-13 (7:51). Carda and Agnew each delivered another trey to eventually give the Bluejays a 29-13 lead with 6:09 left. Up 37-21 in the closing seconds of the period, senior Olivia Elger drew a shooting foul beyond the arc to send Creighton to the locker room with a 40-21 advantage.
Creighton pushed its lead to its high-point of 23 in the opening moments of the third on a pull-up jumper from Saunders (44-21) and again midway through the frame (50-27 with 5:09 left), coasting to a 58-42 win down the stretch of the game.
Agnew led all scorers, topping 30 for the second time this season, and grabbed nine rebounds. Temi Carda also finished in double figures with 12 points. Villanova got a team-high 18 points from Mary Gedaka in the loss, while Maddy Siegrist closed the contest with 10 points.
Creighton continues a challenging four games in eight day stretch to open BIG EAST play as the Bluejays host Marquette on Friday, Jan. 3rd at 7:00 pm (CT).
