OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball will start the season with a match against national runner-up Nebraska and host a pair of tournaments as part of its 2019 schedule, released today by head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth.
"We took the same formula that we've taken in the past. We want to play some of the toughest teams in the country and I think we're doing that during the non-conference," said Booth. "Our first five matches the first two weekends are really, really tough, and I think we'll learn a lot about our team. It should be really fun."
Each of Creighton's first five matches come away from home, and all five are against teams that won 20+ matches and appeared in the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The Bluejays open the regular-season on Aug. 30 with a match at Nebraska, then take on Baylor a day later to close out play in Lincoln at the Husker Invitational.
CU then heads to Cedar Falls, Iowa, for three matches in 31 hours as it renews rivalries with Kentucky, Northern Iowa and USC on Sept. 6-7. It's the sixth rendition of a tournament between the teams that continues to alternate host schools.
Creighton will host 13 matches at D.J. Sokol Arena, including back-to-back home tournaments on Sept. 13-14 and Sept. 19-21. The Bluejay Invitational features CU hosting Nebraska-Omaha for the first time at the Division I level, former MVC rival Drake, and perennial power Washington. It'll be the first meeting between the Bluejays and Huskies since UW eliminated CU from the 2018 NCAA Tournament, snapping CU's 15-match home win streak.
One week later the Creighton Classic will be held at D.J. Sokol Arena. Creighton hosts Wichita State on Sept. 19 before hosting Wyoming for the first time since 2003 two days later. The Cowgirls are one of eight (out of 10) non-conference foes who won 20 or more matches a season ago.
The Bluejays remain at home when it opens BIG EAST play on Sept. 27 and 29 vs. Villanova and Georgetown, respectively.
"I think the conference schedule lays out well for us," noted Booth. "I think the BIG EAST is going to be stronger even than they were last year, so that should be exciting. I can't wait to get going and get started with them."
Ten of CU's final 16 BIG EAST matches will come on the road, and the Jays open October with four straight road matches against league competition. The final contest in that stretch is an Oct. 12 tilt at Marquette in a rematch of Creighton's last two BIG EAST Championship title victories. Marquette's lone trip to Omaha comes on Nov. 22, two days before CU closes the regular-season on Nov. 24 with a date against DePaul that will also serve as Senior Day.
For the fourth straight season, Creighton and Providence will meet on consecutive nights at the same site, giving CU an unbalanced league schedule. The 2019 slate calls for both meetings to be contested in Rhode Island, with those coming on Oct. 25-26 to wrap up October and mark the midpoint of the conference race.
Marquette will host the 2019 BIG EAST Championship on Nov. 29-30, and the NCAA Tournament starts on Dec. 6. Creighton finished the 2018 season with a 29-5 record, capturing its fifth straight BIG EAST regular-season and Tournament titles. The Bluejays reached a seventh straight NCAA Tournament, hosting the first two rounds of the postseason for the second straight fall.
