Late Goal Sends Bluejays Home with Tough Loss
Boca Raton, Fla. -- Locked in a scoreless battle with Florida Atlantic into the final ten minutes, the Creighton women's soccer team conceded the game-winning goal with 81:58 showing on the clock as the Bluejays fell to the Owls 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 22.
The loss brings Creighton back to Omaha at 6-3-0 on the season, while Florida Atlantic moved to 7-2-0.
Officially out shot 13-2, the match was far closer than the statistics display.
Neither squad pushed across a shot in the opening ten minutes, then a flurry of attempts from the Owls came in the 12th, 14th and 21st minutes. Florida Atlantic's best chance in the opening period came in the 23rd minute as Sammy Vitols sent a ball off her left foot toward the net, but Creighton goalkeeper Keelan Terrell mindfully watched as the ball struck the crossbar. Terrell quickly corralled the shot as the two teams battled into a scoreless halftime.
While Creighton was not credited with a shot in the opening period, the Bluejays forced three corners.
The second half saw the same crossbar that stopped Vitols block an open look from Bluejay freshman Skylar Heinrich as the Omaha native saw he attempt from 10 yards blocked by Florida Atlantic goalkeeper Cassidy Wasdin directly into the crossbar. The ball, however, bounded into the air and found the foot of an Owl defender.
Florida Atlantic got another opportunity in the final ten minutes. Taking advantage of a Creighton foul, the Owls earned a corner. Florida Atlantic converted the corner as Jessica Monteiro headed a ball towards the net. Creighton's last chance to keep the match scoreless was the head of Bluejay senior Taryn Jakubowski. The midfielder was able to get to the shot and head it, but this time the crossbar was not so kind with the net grabbing it for the only tally of the match.
It was the Bluejays second consecutive loss on their Florida road trip. The Bluejays return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 28 as Creighton opens BIG EAST play at home against DePaul at 1:00 pm (CT).
