Men's Soccer Records 2-1 Socctoberfest Victory Over #21 Akron, Posts First Win Of Season

Dominic Briggs provided the game-winning goal during the 37th minute
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over No. 21 Akron in front of a crowd of 4,818 during the Bluejays' home opener and Socctoberfest at Morrison Stadium on Friday night.
The Bluejays moved to 1-1-1 on the season while the Zips fell to 0-3-0 overall.
Ziyad Fares and Dominic Briggs each scored first-half goals to propel Johnny Torres to his first victory as head coach at Creighton. The Bluejays also improved to a perfect 8-0-0 during Socctoberfest matches and recorded their 80th victory in program history against a ranked opponent.
Creighton got on the board in the 33rd minute as senior Luke Haakenson beat an Akron defender and put a shot on goal but was denied by Zips' goalkeeper Tor Saunders. Fares recovered a rebound and found the back of the net to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later in the 37th minute Creighton extended its lead as sophomore Charles Auguste slid a pass through the box to find Briggs who beat a defender, sent the ball past Saunders and gave the Bluejays a 2-0 advantage. Kuba Polat also received an assist on the eventual game-winning goal. The goal marked Briggs' second of the season.
Akron cut into the Bluejays' lead in half during the 40th minute as Federico Serra sent a cross through the box to Christian Lue Young who blasted a shot off one of his teammates and into the back of the net.
The Bluejays had an opportunity to extend their lead in the 70th minute as Polat sent a long pass towards senior Connor Ramlo on the right side of the box. Ramlo headed the ball to Haakenson who found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed as the Bluejays were called for being offside.
The Zips held a 15-13 advantage in shots to end the match, as Creighton's Paul Kruse finished the night with four saves. Akron also ended the night with an 11-5 edge in corner kicks.
Creighton returns to the pitch for a match on Monday afternoon in Omaha against Columbia. First touch between the Bluejays and Lions is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
