Villanova, Pa. -- Down as much as 14 points early (16-2), the Creighton women's basketball team rallied to take the lead in the third quarter before giving way at Villanova on Saturday in a 73-68 loss.
Following Saturday's result the Bluejays dropped to 2-5 on the season and 1-2 in BIG EAST Conference play, while Villanova moved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in conference action.
Playing without three starters due to injuries, Creighton opened the game 1-of-10 from the field to fall behind the Wildcats 16-2 with 2:24 left in the opening frame. From that point forward the offense began to find its footing, finding buckets from junior Payton Brotzki and sophomore DeArica Pryor in the closing moments to trail 20-8 heading into the second.
Down 23-10 early in the second, Creighton rattled off 11 consecutive points to make it a 23-21 contest (4:56). Senior Temi Carda was the driving force in the Bluejay rally, scoring seven herself. Brotzki got the run started with a back cut layup. Shortly thereafter Carda connected from long range to make it 23-19 (5:16). Carda dropped in the next bucket as well to complete the Bluejay run.
Villanova, however, responded to hold a 34-28 edge at halftime.
The Wildcats pushed their edge to 37-30 early in the third, but Carda was there once more to galvanize her team. The Minnesota native delivered a floating jumper to start a 6-1 surge to bring it back to a one possession game down 38-36 (7:56).
After trading free throws, Creighton got a defensive stop and a layup from senior Tatum Rembao to knot the game at 40-40 (6:27). Later in the frame Creighton took the lead on a driving layup by Carda to tie the game at 44-44, then another layup through the lane by Pryor to put the Bluejays up 46-44 (4:30).
The Wildcats closed the quarter with eight straight points from their star player, Maddy Siegrist to reclaim a 54-48 edge heading to the fourth.
The final frame saw Creighton get back within one possession twice, but the free throw disparity proved too much of an uphill battle.
Villanova finished the game 19-of-25 from the charity stripe, while Creighton was 8-of-10.
Carda finished the game with 21 points, while Rembao contributed 10 points. Meanwhile Siegrist led Villanova with 34 points and 19 rebounds, while Brianna Herlihy delivered 20 points.
