Creighton VB honored for fifth time since 2010 season.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) has announced its Fall All-Sports winners for the 2019-20 academic year, with Creighton sharing the honor in women's volleyball with UCSB and Marquette.
Last year's Creighton team finished 25-6 and was ranked 16th in the final AVCA poll after making an eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Creighton swept Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before battling in a five-set loss at eventual Final Four participant Minnesota.
A total of 97 institutions across 11 different conferences represent NCAA Division I-AAA, which consists of schools that do not sponsor football. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, not all seasons were able to be played and therefore an Overall All-Sport Trophy winner will not be declared. Despite the All-Sport Trophy cancellation, the DI-AAA ADA made the decision to recognize fall sports honorees. Â
"We are regretfully unable to announce a 2019-20 NACDA DI-AAA ADA All Sports Trophy winner due to the impact of COVID-19 on our collegiate seasons," DI-AAA ADA President and University of Portland Vice President for Athletics Scott Leykam said. "We did, however, feel it was important to recognize our honorees from the fall. We congratulate all of our fall sports winners and sincerely hope we can award an All-Sports Trophy in 2020-21."
The following institutions finished atop the 2019-20 DI-AAA ADA Fall All-Sports Standings in their respective sport: men's cross country – Portland; women's cross country – UTRGV; men's soccer – UC Santa Barbara; women's soccer – Xavier and Hofstra; women's volleyball – Marquette, UC Santa Barbara and Creighton.
With its 2019-20 recognition, Creighton becomes the first women's volleyball program to win five All-Sports trophies, one more than Wichita State and three more than Marquette and Long Beach State. Other schools to win once in women's volleyball include Loyola Marymount, UALR, UC Santa Barbara, St. John's, Santa Clara, American, Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and Saint Louis.
Since the inception of the awards in 2007-08, Creighton has now won 14 such accolades across all sports, including five times in volleyball (2010-11, 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2019-20), four times in men's soccer (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2015-16), twice in women's basketball (2012-13, 2017-18) and once each in baseball (2018-19), men's basketball (2013-14) and softball (2009-10).
About the Division I-AAA ADA: Now in its 19th year, the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association's mission is to enhance initiatives common to its Division I-AAA membership (the Division I institutions that do not sponsor football), in particular, aspects related to their flagship basketball programs.
