Carda and Rembao Combine for 33 points
Cincinnati, Ohio -- A strong defensive effort and a timely fourth quarter surge lifted the Creighton women's basketball team to a 53-50 win at Xavier on Sunday, Jan. 3.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 3-6 on the season and 2-3 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier fell to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
Trailing 41-40 entering the final frame, the Bluejays limited Xavier to just two points in the opening 7:26 to claim a 51-43 lead (2:34). Creighton opened the fourth with the ball, finding senior Temi Carda for a second-chance layup to seize the lead. After a defensive stand featuring a block from freshman Emma Ronsiek as well as a steal by freshman Molly Mogensen, the Bluejays found Ronsiek inside for an easy bucket.
Xavier interrupted Creighton's run with two in the paint, but senior Tatum Rembao responded with a traditional three-point play to put Creighton up 47-43 with 7:02 remaining. Back-to-back floaters from Carda pushed the Bluejay advantage to its largest margin at 51-43 with 5:42 left. The game remained right there into the last three minutes of play.
Down the stretch a couple of Bluejay turnovers gave Xavier new life. In the final minute the Musketeers had three chances to pull even, yet each time Creighton's defense denied Xavier to preserve the win.
Down 6-2 early in the game, the Bluejays used a 7-0 run to claim its first lead of the game. Mogensen got things starter with a trey from the left wing, then Ronsiek converted a fast break layup to push Creighton up 7-6 (6:02). A floating jumper sank by Rembao with 3:17 completed the run and the Bluejays held a 12-10 lead at the end of one.
Down 25-24 coming out of the locker room Carda scored the first six of the second half to give the Bluejays the lead (30-25), but Xavier was able to reclaim the advantage in the closing moments of the period.Â
Carda and Rembao led Creighton on offense with a combined 33 points, led by 18 from Carda. Xavier got a double-double from Kaelynn Satterfield, who finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
