Four Bluejays Recognized in BIG EAST End of Year Awards
Omaha, Neb. -- Senior Diego Gutierrez became the first player since Creighton's Fabian Herbers (2014 & 2015) to repeat as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year as the conference's Yearly Awards were announced on Monday, November 8.
It marks the sixth time in eight seasons a Creighton student-athlete has received the honor (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020). He is also the first back-to-back offensive recipient since 2015–Creighton's Fabian Herbers accomplished the feat in 2014 and 2015–and the seventh individual to do so in BIG EAST history (Herbers, CU, O'Brian White, UConn (2007, 2008), Maurizio Rocha, UConn (1997, 1998), Huey Ferguson, SJU (1992, 1993), Pat O'Kelly, SHU (1988, 1989) and Dan Donigan, UConn (1987, 1988)).
The BIG EAST leader in points (24), goals (nine) and assist (six), Gutierrez also sits atop the conference leader board in goals per game (0.56) and points per game (1.50) during the 2021 season. Gutierrez took home the honor last season (2020) with the league lead in goals, points, goals per game and points per game.
Gutierrez was a unanimous choice for All-BIG EAST First Team. Senior Callum Watson earned All-BIG EAST Second Team, while seniors Charles Auguste and Paul Kruse earned All-BIG EAST Third Team honors. Watson closed the season with two goals and two assists (six points) in 15 matches, while Auguste delivered one goal and a pair of assists. Kruse closed out the 2021 campaign with a 1.34 goals against average, posting five shutouts and making 69 saves in 1,542 minutes.
The Bluejays will wait until the NCAA field is announced on Monday, November 15. Creighton (8-7-2) closed the regular season with five victories in its final seven matches to host a first round match in the BIG EAST Tournament.
