Gutierrez and Watson Earn United Soccer Coaches Association Regional Honors

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton men's soccer seniors Diego Gutierrez and Callum Watson received postseason recognition from the United Soccer Coaches Association on December 8. Gutierrez was named to the East Region First Team, while Watson earned East Region Third Team Honors.
Gutierrez closed the regular season by repeating as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the year, also earning a second consecutive selection onto the All-BIG EAST First Team. A unanimous choice for BIG EAST First Team, Gutierrez is the BIG EAST leader in points (27), goals (10) and assists (seven), Gutierrez also sits atop the conference leader board in goals per game (0.53) and points per game (1.42) during the 2021 season. He started each of Creighton's 19 matches in 2021, closing the season with 1,535 minutes played. Gutierrez scored in 12 matches for the Bluejays in 2021, including eight of the final nine. His best output came when the Bluejays needed him most, delivering two goals and one assist in Creighton's 4-2 win at Villanova. That match began the Bluejays' six match unbeaten streak (5-0-1) that helped Creighton reach the BIG EAST Tournament and ultimately the NCAA Tournament. He scored the game-winning goal in dramatic fashion in Creighton's 1-0 win over Missouri State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 18, splitting two defenders in the 78th minute.
Watson appeared in 17 matches during the 2021 season, earning 16 starts. He delivered two goals and two assists, playing a combined 1,310 minutes. Watson's best performance of the season came in Creighton's 3-1 win over Seton Hall on October 23, scoring one goal and assisting another. In the previous 2-0 win over Xavier, Watson netted his first goal of the season. Callum was recognized with a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team following the 2021 campaign.
In total, 17 members of the BIG EAST Conference were recognized on the United Soccer Coaches Association All-Region Teams.
