Creighton Athletics will host its annual Leaders for Life event as an online celebration of its female student-athletes and their supporters. Join Creighton Athletics online May 3-7, 2021 to connect with our coaches, players and the 2021 Honorees.
An event hosted annually the first week of May, Leaders for Life raises important funds for annual and endowed scholarships for female student-athletes and provides Creighton Athletics an occasion to honor two influential supporters of women's athletics for their continued leadership and advancement at Creighton and among the community. While this year's event will be modified with the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and supporters in mind, Creighton Athletics and the Leaders for Life committee remain committed to sharing the incredible stories from its female student-athletes, coaches and the 2021 Honorees – Josie Abboud and Laura Baker.
The week will feature social media posts on the GoCreighton Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube pages with various fun facts and videos. Creighton female student-athletes are more than just athletes; they are outstanding students, engaged community volunteers and future professionals and leaders in their communities.
This year, we look forward to honoring current Creighton Jaybacker Executive Board member, Josie (Politico) Abboud, BSN'95, FACHE, with the Believe and Achieve Award. Abboud serves as President and CEO of Methodist Hospital and Methodist Women's Hospital. In 2020, she was the recipient of the ICAN Leadership Award and Creighton University's Alumni Merit Award.
In 2018, she was recognized by Becker's Hospital Review as a top women's hospital and health system leader to know. Abboud was also previously named as one of the Midlands Business Journal's "Women of Distinction" and a "40 Under 40" honoree. She is an active community leader and has served on the Creighton Prep Board of Trustees, Marian High School Board of Directors, Creighton University's College of Nursing Advisory Board, the 6-state High Plains Division board of the American Cancer Society, the Hospice House Board and most recently on the Jaybacker Executive Board. Abboud also serves as District One Chairman of the Nebraska Hospital Association.
Abboud earned her bachelor's degree in nursing at Creighton University and her master's degree in business administration and health care management from Regis University in Denver. In 2020, she was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, honoris causa by Midland University. She and husband Jason Abboud, JD'97, are proud parents of Xavier (17) and Brielle (16).
We are also thrilled to honor former women's basketball and volleyball alumna, Laura (Gebhart) Baker, BS'95, PA-C, with the Leader for Life Award. Baker is founder of LSB Medical Inc., a medical claims processing company with an emphasis on serving veterans with disability claims. Prior to forming her own business in 2014, Baker was a family practice physician assistant and emergency room PA. Since graduating from Arizona School of Health Sciences with her MS in 2001, Baker has embraced mentoring health care students including PA's, MD's and nursing students.
Baker is a volunteer firefighter and paramedic for the Gretna Fire Department, volunteers at St. Stephen the Martyr in Youth Catechist for Catholic Education and coaches YMCA and Gretna Youth sports. Baker received a 2020 Award from the Nebraska Office of Emergency Health Systems for her lifesaving work.
Baker has held Creighton Women's Basketball season tickets since the first year tickets were available. She continues to attend each home game. She and husband John Baker, III are proud parents of Jacquelyn (11) and John IV (10).
