Men's Soccer Outlasts DePaul In High Scoring Affair, 4-3, Clinches Spot In BIG EAST Tourney

Bluejays and Blue Demons combined for five goals in the first 23 minutes
Duncan McGuire converted the game-winning goal during the 84th minute, just four minutes after the Blue Demons tied the match at 3-3 with a penalty kick goal.
The Bluejay freshman received a cross from Diego Gutierrez and slotted the ball inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
Creighton improved to 5-2-0 during BIG EAST play and 6-4-0 overall, while DePaul dropped to 2-5-0 in league play and 2-5-2 overall.Â
The Bluejays' victory also helped Creighton clinch a spot in the BIG EAST tournament. If Butler (2-2-2 in BIG EAST play) defeats Xavier on Saturday and Creighton on April 10, the Bluejays and Bulldogs would be tied with a .625 winning percentage, but Creighton owns the tiebreaker. Creighton and Butler would have split their season series (1-1-0), so the next tiebreaker would be results against the top team in the division, which is Marquette. The Bluejays went 1-1-0 against the Golden Eagles, while the Bulldogs finished 0-1-1. Creighton has a chance for the top seed in the Midwest Division with a win against Butler and a Marquette loss to Xavier on April 10.
The BIG EAST tournament will consist of the top two teams from both the Midwest Division and East Division. The semifinals will take place on April 15 and the final will be held on April 17. All three matches will be played at the highest overall seed.Â
The Bluejays and Blue Demons combined to score five goals in the first half on Friday night at Morrison.Â
Creighton nearly scored in the opening moments of the match as Alejandro Maillet and Mitch Dobson each forced a pair of saves by the DePaul goalkeeper during the first 39 seconds of play.Â
The Bluejays found the back of the net during the ninth minute. Keegan Boyd tallied his first goal of the season after receiving a pass along the right side of the 18-yard box from Diego Gutierrez. Jake Ronneberg also tallied an assist on the play.
DePaul tied the match with its first shot of the evening. Jake Richards broke away from the Creighton defense and knotted the match at 1-1 during the 14th minute.
The Blue Demons took a 2-1 lead in the 22nd minute with a goal by Marek Gonda.
Just 21 seconds after DePaul gained the advantage, Creighton drew a foul in the box, which set up Gutierrez for a PK opportunity. The Omaha native calmly chipped the ball into the net for his team-leading fifth goal and tied the match at 2-2.Â
Less than a minute after the penalty Alejandro Maillet scored his first goal as a Bluejay. The junior received an outlet pass by Callum Watson and sent a shot past the DePaul goalkeeper and inside the far post to give Creighton a 3-2 lead in the 23rd minute.
The Bluejays ended the first 45 minutes of play with a one-goal edge and a 12-3 advantage in shot attempts.
After the scoring explosion in the first half, neither team scored during the first 34 minutes after halftime.Â
DePaul broke the scoring drought in the 80th minute with a penalty-kick goal by Jake Fuderer.
The Bluejays responded in the 84th minute with McGuire's third goal of the season to earn the victory.
Creighton ended the match with an 18-9 edge in shots, while both goalkeepers made four saves. Bluejay freshman Nathan Schnur recorded his fifth win of the season on Friday.Â
The Bluejays and Blue Demons combined for 31 fouls, five yellow cards and one red card.
Creighton returns to the pitch for its regular-season finale on April 10 at Butler. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Bulldogs is set for 10:30 a.m. Central.Â
