Bluejays earned the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions
CAYCE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's tennis team wrapped up its season with a 4-1 setback against Butler during the quarterfinals of the 2021 BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP on Friday evening at the Cayce Fitness & Tennis Center.
The Bluejays ended the 2021 season with a 6-7 record, while the Bulldogs improved to 8-7 and advanced to a semifinal match against top-seeded DePaul on Saturday.
Creighton opened Friday's action by winning the doubles point. Butler claimed a 6-3 win at the No. 2 position before the Bluejays won at the other two slots to earn the first point. Stratton Brown and Joe Hoff combined for a 7-5 win at the top spot, while Armando Gandini and Mac Mease sealed the opening point with a 7-6 (3) victory at the No. 3 position.
Butler took the overall match with four straight-sets singles wins. The Bulldogs won at the No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 slots.
Jose Oscar Diaz earned a first set win at No. 3, 7-5, while Joe Hoff won a tiebreaker in the No. 6 singles match, but both matches did not finish a second frame before the other four matches were decided.
"We fought hard today and just had to keep making runs after getting behind," head coach Tom Lilly said. "In the doubles we were able to make the runs count, but in singles they just played better. We started down a break on too many courts after we had the doubles point momentum and just weren't able to rally enough against a tough Butler team. We are going to miss our four seniors that have made the last several years special."
