Gutierrez claimed BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year accolades
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's soccer senior Diego Gutierrez earned a spot on the 2020-21 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's All-East Region Second Team, the organization announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Gutierrez tied for the BIG EAST lead with 16 points from five goals and six assists during regular-season play on his way to BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors. His assist total also led the conference prior to the postseason and currently ranks tied for 18th nationally heading into the College Cup.Â
The Omaha native recorded a brace twice this season and posted a season-high five points with two goals and an assist at home on March 17 against Butler.Â
Gutierrez, a 2021 MLS SuperDraft selection by the Portland Timbers (third round, 70th overall), owns 15 goals and 19 assists during his collegiate career. He spent three seasons and played in 44 matches at the University of Nebraska Omaha before transferring to Creighton before the fall of 2020.
Gutierrez is one of 11 BIG EAST players listed on the All-East Region first or second team.Â
The teams were selected through voting by member coaches in those respective divisions.Â
All-America teams for Division I will be announced on Thursday. There are no championship banquets for these events this season.
