OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team improves to 2-0 at home with a 7-0 sweep of Northern Iowa on Friday night inside the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improve to 2-1 on the year with the win, while the Panthers fall to 0-1.
Creighton started Friday's action with doubles victories at the top two positions. Kate Krueger and Sarah Wilcox combined for a 6-2 victory at the top position to take an early edge, while Valerie Negin and Malvika Shukla teamed up for a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position to give Creighton the early lead.
The Blujays continued to take control of the match with four straight-sets singles victories, after Negin claimed a 3-0 win by injury default. Shukla won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4, Kruegar finished 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, while Wilcox claimed the match for the Bluejays with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 singles. Meredith Benson also picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 slot for the Jays.
Allison Wilcox earned a three-set triumph at the No. 6 singles. The freshman dropped the opening set 6-3 before claiming a 6-2 victory in the second set. With the dual decided, Wilcox played a super tiebreaker to break the deadlock and won 10-3.
"Our girls played a complete match tonight," said head coach Tom Lilly. "UNI had some injuries to key players and that certainly made a difference on a few courts, but we have had our share of those so far this semester as well. We have something's to work on this coming week in order to put ourselves in better position in doubles and singles. We will keep getting better."
Creighton returns to the court on Feb. 4 as the Bluejays host UNO at the Hanscom Tennis Courts. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
