Despite 2-1 Loss At Xavier, Bluejays Clinch Spot in BIG EAST Championship

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Creighton Women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat at Xavier on Sunday, Oct. 23 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Despite the loss, the Bluejays still clinched a spot in next weeks BIG EAST Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons.
The loss dropped Creighton to 8-3-6 on the season and 5-3-2 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier secured the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Championships, improving to 12-2-4 overall and 5-1-3 in BIG EAST play.
The Bluejays fell behind in the 7th minute of the match as Ella Rogers slipped a pass through Creighton's defense to Chloe Netzel, who flipped a looping shot over the head of Keelan Terrell and into the back of the net giving Xavier an early 1-0 lead.
The Musketeers extended their advantage out to 2-0 in the 33rd minute of play earning a penalty kick on a handball in the box by the Bluejays. Graduate Student Molly McLaughin stepped in and converted the penalty kick giving Xavier a 2-0 lead at the break. It was McLaughin's fourth penalty kick goal of the season.
Down 2-0 in the second half, the Bluejays turned up the intensity on the offensive end of the field. Junior Lara Kazandjian nearly cut the deficit in half in the 51st minute as she blasted a shot off the top of the crossbar. Junior Abigail Santana and senior Aida Kardovic also had scoring opportunities but were denied by Xavier's goalkeeper Maria Galley on both occasions.
Kardovic, however, did pull the Bluejays to within one in the 83rd minute of play. Kardovic drew a foul in the box and buried the penalty kick, cutting the Musketeers lead down to 2-1. The goal by Kardovic was her first goal of the season and snapped Xavier's streak of not allowing a goal at 697 minutes.
Creighton closed the match with a 15-13 edge in shots, while each team recorded three corner kicks.
Creighton closes out the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 27 as the Bluejays host Butler at 6:30 p.m. The Bluejays will honor their seniors prior to the contest.
