Women's Basketball Falls to #10 Connecticut, 76-56

Omaha, Neb. -- Playing in front of an arena record crowd (2,279) for a women's basketball game and the programs first sellout in Bluejay history, the Creighton women's basketball team fell to No. 10 Connecticut, 76-56, on Wednesday, Feb. 2.
The Bluejays dropped to 15-6 on the season and 10-3 in BIG EAST play with the loss, while the Huskies improved to 14-4 overall and 9-0 in conference action.
The first quarter saw the Bluejays took an early 6-0 advantage as sophomore Lauren Jensen canned a pair of three-pointers, after forcing a shot-clock violations on the Huskies first possession of the game. A pair of three-pointers and a pair of layups by sophomore's Molly Morgensen and Morgan Maly helped push the Jays lead out to 18-6, before taking a 20-11 lead into the second period.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth battle as the Bluejays and the Huskies traded baskets through the midway point of the period. Mogensen knocked down her second three of the game while junior Rachel Saunders connected on a mid-range jumper to match Creighton's largest lead of the game at 32-20 with 3:01 left in the half.
Connecticut responded with a 10-0 run down the stretch to cut the Bluejay's lead to 32-30 at the break. It was just the fourth time this season and only the second time in BIG EAST play the Huskies had trailed at the break.
The Huskies took control of the game in the third quarter with an 8-0 run over the first three minutes of the period to take a 38-32 lead. The Bluejays struggled to find their rhythm on the offensive end of the floor as Creighton shot just 3-of-17 (17.6%) from the field in the third period as Connecticut took a 49-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Huskies extended their lead out to as much as 22 at 72-50 with 2:04 remaining in the game, before claiming the victory 76-56.
Mogensen closed the game with a team-high 15 points, while Saunders added nine for the Bluejays.
Connecticut's Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Christyn Williams each scored a game-high 17 points, while Caroline Ducharme added 13 points. Azzi Fudd and Evina Westbrook also reach double-figures for the Huskies with 10 points respectively.
The sellout of D.J. Sokol Arena marked the third time the women's basketball team had recorded at least 2,000 fans, breaking the old mark of 2,121 set against Wichita State on Jan. 29, 2011.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday at 7 p.m. when it travels to DePaul in a pivotal BIG EAST road contest.
