Men’s Tennis Drops BIG EAST Contest at Marquette, 6-1
4/1/2022 4:51:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Creighton men's tennis team fell to Marquette, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Helfaer Tennis stadium in Milwaukee.
The Bluejays moved to 6-7 on the year, while the Golden Eagles improved to 5-12 overall.
The host Golden Eagles earned the doubles point with win at the top two spots. Marquette took the early advantage with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles slot before Zack Maline and Shin Inoue evened things up with a 6-4 triumph at the No. 3 doubles position. Marquette's Fran San Andres and Rami Scheetz then grabbed the first point of the match with a 7-6 tiebreaking win over Matthew Lanahan and Casey Ross at the top doubles spot.
Lanahan earned the Bluejays only point of the match with a 6-4, 6-3 straight-sets victory over Marquette's Will Tennison at the No. 5 spot.
The Golden Eagles secured the dual with a trio of straight-set triumphs at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles positions and a pair of three-set wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 slots. Ross forced a third set the top spot with a 6-3 second set win but fell in the decisive third set. Similar to Ross, Inoue forced a decisive third set with a 6-4 win in the second set of the No. 4 singles but fell in the third frame as Marquette claimed the 6-1 victory.
"This was a very disappointing match," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We had a few guys who just weren't able to get anything going and played poorly. The lack of focus and giving away too many points and games was frustrating, especially considering it was a conference match. Hopefully our guys got it out of their system and can compete for a full match tomorrow."
The Bluejays returns to the courts tomorrow for a match in Chicago against DePaul. First serve between the Bluejays and Blue Demons is set for 1:15 p.m.
