Grad transfer had more than 1,800 digs at Morehead State
OMAHA, Neb. – Defensive specialist Allison Whitten will transfer from Morehead State to join the Creighton Volleyball program, head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth announced on Wednesday, May 18th.
Whitten closed her Morehead State career ranked fifth in school history with 1,823 career digs, and her 577 digs last fall ranked 18th nationally. She will have one season of eligibility to play with the Bluejays when she arrives this fall.
"Allison is a great passer and defender," said Booth. "She impressed us when we played her in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. She was often in a two-person serve receive so she can cover some ground. Beyond being a great player, I love the leadership that she has and the human that she is. Both she and Jazz will enhance our culture."
Whitten is the third graduate transfer to head to Creighton in the past two seasons. Libero Abby Bottomley earned All-BIG EAST honors last fall, while Jazz Schmidt will arrive at CU this fall after earning Division II All-America honors at Palm Beach Atlantic.
"I love that both of our grad transfers had great experiences and are leaders and high character, culture kids from the schools they are coming from. That's really attractive to us when we recruit a transfer," noted Booth.
A native of Simpsonville, S.C., Whitten became MSU's first true freshman libero since 2006 and never relinquished her role, leading the Eagles in digs each of the last four seasons while posting a combined 81-34 record.
She ended her freshman year with 20 straight matches of 10 or more digs in 2018, then as a sophomore became the eighth different player in program history with 500 or more digs in a season. The 5-foot-8 Whitten ranked fourth in the OVC with both 37 service aces and 514 digs to help the Eagles reach the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in 2019.
Whitten became the 27th member of Morehead State's 1,000 Dig Club early in her third season on Feb. 14, 2021. She had double-figure digs in 18-of-19 contests and finished with 19 digs and two service aces in MSU's 3-2 win over Creighton in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Morehead State finished the season with a 17-2 record.
Last fall Whitten had 577 digs in 119 sets, good for an average of 4.85 digs per set. Whitten had a pair of matches with 40 digs last season, making her the only woman in the country with multiple 40-dig matches in either of the last two seasons. She owned nine matches of 20 digs or more in the fall of 2021, was named OVC Defensive Player of the Week once, and ranked fourth in the league in digs per set.
Creighton is coming off a 31-4 season that saw the Bluejays win the BIG EAST for the eighth straight season, which led to a 10th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
