Second-Half Goal Gives Bluejays 1-1 Draw Against Gonzaga

Abigail Santana delivered the Equalizing goal in the 70th minute
MISSOULA, Mont. – Trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, the Creighton women's soccer team used an equalizing goal from junior Abigail Santana in the 70th minute to earn a 1-1 draw against Gonzaga on Sunday, Aug. 21 in a neutral site match.
The Bluejays move to 0-0-2 on the season following Sunday's tie, while the Bulldogs move to 0-1-1 overall.
Gonzaga notched the first goal of the match in the 20th minute off a header from Marissa Garcia. The play was set into motion as Kacy Johnston fielded a pass down the sideline and dribbled around a Bluejay before sending a cross to the far post where Garcia found the back of the net.
Facing the 1-0 deficit, the Bluejays increased its intensity on the offensive side of the pitch. Sophomore Azumi Manriki and junior Lara Kazandjian each fired a shot at goal but was unable to deliver the equalizer before the half.
The Bulldogs controlled possession throughout the first 45 minute of action, outshooting the Bluejays 12-4.
With Creighton trailing 1-0 at the break, the Bluejays played with renewed offensive urgency in the second half, firing off seven shots in the frame.
In the 70th minute, junior Ariana Mondiri recovered a loose ball just outside the top right corner of the 18-yard box. She fought her way around a Gonzaga defender before sending a cross into the middle of the box, where Santana headed in the Bluejays first goal of the season and the equalizer.
Over the final 20 minutes, senior goalkeeper Keelan Terrell and Creighton's backline fought off a fiery of shots to earn the 1-1 draw.
Gonzaga outshot the Bluejays 24-11 in the contest, while also holding a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Creighton hosts its first home match of the season on Thursday, Aug. 25 when the Bluejays welcome Kansas City into Morrison Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
