Men’s Tennis Takes Down Gustavus Adolphus, 5-2, For First Win of the Season

Bluejays earn doubles point for first time while earning wins at four of top five single slots
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Creighton men's tennis team defeated Gustavus Adolphus, 5-2, on Saturday night at the Choice Health & Fitness center in Grand Forks, N.D. for their first win of the season.
The Bluejays move to 1-3 on the year with the win, while Gustavus Adolphus fell to 1-1 overall.
Creighton opened the match with a pair of victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions to earn the doubles point for the first time this season. Alejandro Gandini and Matthew Lanahan paired up for a 7-6 (7-5) win at the top doubles position, while Shin Inoue and Zack Maline claimed a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Bluejays continued their success during singles action by winning four of the top five positions to seal the overall dual victory.
Lanahan got things started with a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory at the No. 2 singles slot, while Gandini captured a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot to give Creighton a 3-0 lead. Inoue also won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 4 spot, clinching the first win of the season for the Bluejays.
With the match in hand, the Bluejays got one final win from freshman Kirtan Patel. Patel dropped the first set 6-4 but battled back to earn identical 6-4 wins in set two and three.
"We knew Gustavus Adolphus was going to give us everything they had and that they had talent to push us throughout the lineup," said head coach Tom Lilly. "I really liked our fight and intensity today after a very long match yesterday."
The Bluejays will return to the court on Friday, February 10 when they open the home portion of their schedule against Northern Illinois.
