OMAHA, Neb. – Powered by a pair of goals from senior Lara Kazandjian and freshman Anja Jestrovic, the Creighton women's soccer team shutout Seton Hall, 2-0, in the Bluejays ninth annual Pink Out match on Thursday, Oct. 12.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 4-7-4 on the season and 2-5-0 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 6-6-3 overall and 2-3-3 in league action.
Creighton stormed out of the gates as the much aggressive team, taking the lead in the 10th minute. Sent into motion by picture perfect passing freshman Tejia Murray-Powell found Jestrovic on the near side of the 18-yard. From there Jestrovic slotted a pass through the Pirates backline to Kazandjian who fired her third shot of the afternoon into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Seton Hall made a push late in the opening period, firing off a pair of shots but neither one coming close to goal as Creighton held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half.
Coming out of the locker room with a 1-0 lead, the Bluejays quickly extended the lead with a goal by Jestrovic in the 57th minute. Senior Peighton Steffen played a ball down the sideline to graduate student Gabby Grimaldi, who lofted a pass into the box to the feet of Jestrovic. The Belgrade, Serbia native took over from there, making a Pirate defender miss before slotting a shot pass the dining goalkeeper to push the Bluejays advantage out to 2-0.
Creighton's defense would take over the final 30 minutes, limiting Seton Hall to a season low one shot on goal as fifth year senior Keelan Terrell moved into a tie for sixth on the career shutout list with her 17th career shutout.
Creighton finished the match with a 15-6 edge in shots, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal while also holding a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks created.
The Bluejays have a week off as Creighton has its BIG EAST bye before traveling to the Windy City to battle DePaul on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m.
