Bluejay Women’s Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking 1-0 Loss To #20 Xavier

The Bluejays honors five senior prior to the match
OMAHA, Neb. – Despite an impressive defensive effort, the Creighton women's soccer suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to No. 20 Xavier on Sunday afternoon in the Bluejays' final home match of the 2023 season.
The loss dropped Creighton to 4-8-5 on the year and to 2-6-1 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier improved to 12-2-4 overall and 5-0-4 in conference action.
Battling for a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, Creighton will need a win at Butler next Thursday, plus a Seton Hall loss, a DePaul loss or draw and a Marquette loss or draw to clinch the sixth seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
A defensive slugfest was decided in the 86th minute as Xavier's Sonia Vargas netted her fourth goal of the season to give the Musketeers a 1-0 lead. Xavier's Samantha Wiehe set the play into motion, recovering a loose ball in the midfield and slotting a pass to Vargas on the run. Vargas was then left with a one-on-one opportunity before slotting a shot pass the outstretched leg of the Bluejays fifth-year senior goalkeeper Keelan Terrell.
The Bluejays missed out on a pair of scoring opportunities late in the first half as junior Alyssa Judkins blasted a shot of the post and sophomore Andrine Westlie missed a shot just high.
Despite the loss Terrell was brilliant in goal, collecting a season-high tying seven saves. One of her best stops came in the 36th as a centering pass came to Ella Rogers, who fired a shot at the top left corner of the goal. Terrell made an incredible read and made a leaping punch save to keep the Musketeers off the scoreboard early.
Xavier closed the match with a 14-9 edge in shots and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks created.
Creighton wraps up the 2023 regular season on Thursday, October 26th at Butler in a must-win situation. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. (CT) from the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind.
