OMAHA, Neb. – Locked in a fantastic 2-2 battle in the final three minute of the match after rallying from a 2-0 deficit, the Creighton women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to St. John's on Thursday, Oct. 5 inside Morrison Stadium. The Red Storm netted the game-winning goal on a looping header from Angelina Scoma with just over two minutes remaining in the match.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-7-4 on the season and to 0-5-0 in the BIG EAST play, while St. John's moved to 7-4-2 overall and 2-3-0 in league action.
St. John's stormed out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, netting goals in the 22nd and 32nd minute. Senior Ava Collins was credited with the opening goal, striking the back of the net for the first time this season beating Creighton goalkeeper Keelan Terrell in a one-on-one opportunity on the right side of the six-yard box.
Ten minutes later, junior Athina Sofroniou pushed the Red Storms advantage out to 2-0 with her second goal of the season. The scored was set into motion as St. John's earned a free kick on the near sideline. Softroniou blasted a cross into the box off the free kick, but a missed clear allowed the ball to bounce into the back of the net for a goal.
Creighton would cut the deficit in half in the 41st minute on the first career goal by freshman Anja Jestrovic off a rebounded penalty kick. The Bluejays earned the PK on a handball in the box by St. John's Emily Riggins. Jestrovic's penalty kick attempt was saved by St. John's goalkeeper Maria O'Sullivan, but she rebounded her own miss and touched the back of the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Coming out of the locker room, Creighton increased it offensive intensity, controlling possession throughout the second half.
The increased pressure paid off in the 64th minute as freshman Tilly Thomas leveled the match at 2-2 with the first goal of the collegiate career. In the right place at the right time, Thomas headed in her first goal, leaping over O'Sullivan after her punch save on a shot by senior Abigail Santana hit the cross bar.
The match remained knotted at two until Scoma lifted the Red Storm to victory with the first goal of the career in the 88th minute.
Creighton dominated time of possession and held a 20-7 edge in shots, while also holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. O'Sullivan snagged a season-high seven saves in the match, while Terrell collected three.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 8 as Creighton returns to the east coast to take on Villanova. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT from Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pa.
